Daytime presentations focus on forensic technical investigations in practice. Bloodstain patterns are created “live”, the biological trace recovery is demonstrated and the DNA investigation process is shown step by step. Friday evening a mock crime scene needs to be processed by the participants. Baysian statistics will be made clear by using case work.

The course is offered to lawyers in Holland, the UK and the US. Our request for accreditation points for continuing legal education for participants is pending. Five previously offered courses have been rated by defense lawyers as 8 out of 10 or higher.

Registration for the course is 1500 euros (approximately $2000). This includes Friday lunch, dinner with 2 beverages and one night’s accommodation in the hotel, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. (Additional nights at the hotel can be arranged at a rate of 58 euros per night). Maximum number of participants is limited to 40. Registration deadline is July 1st. Late registrations, space permitting, will be an additional 50 euros. Additional course information and travel directions will be sent to you by Sept 10th. Cancellations by September 10th get a 75% refund. After September 10th it is 50%. If you are unable to attend, a replacement may be sent upon informing IFS. Payment is due by August 15th with a check or money order made payable to IFS LLC and sent to IFS LLC, 5377 Tiger Bend Lane, Morrison, CO, 80465. Participation is only guaranteed when full tuition is paid.

    Speakers
Mike IIles: Works with the Ontario Provincial Police in Canada, with extensive experience in complex murder cases. Teaches and is a mentor in bloodstain pattern analysis. His presentation covers processing crime scenes and how these relate to the current state of science.

Ken Shorrock: Home Office Pathologist in the UK who partners with forensic pathologists covering south-east England, including London. Experienced on several international high profile cases. Explains what a forensic pathologist can and cannot do.

Dave Barclay: Former head of the Department of Technical Evidence of the National Crime and Operations Faculty (NCOF), Bramshill, UK. Currently working as a consultant in the UK and Australia. Teaches at Hull University in the UK. Specializes in criminalistics and technical evidence.

Graham Jackson: Has been working for years as a Forensic Scientist for the Forensic Science Services, UK. Currently a consultant and teacher at Abertay University in Scotland. The only scientist who can talk in a comprehensible way about statistics, in general, and specifically about Bayesian statistics.

Eugene Liscio: Registered Professional Engineer and owner of AI2-3D, located in Toronto, Ontario. He is a specialist in photogrammetry (the science of taking measurements from photographs) and 3D forensic visualizations. His presentation focuses on the latest 3D measurement techniques used in mapping bodily injuries, bloodstain patterns and shooting reconstructions and how this data can be analyzed, visualized and used by the defense.

Danny Spendlove: Forensic Pathologist and consultant for IFS. Trained in Bern, Switzerland in forensic pathology and Virtopsy (autopsy using CT and MRI scanners). For this presentation he focuses on injury interpretation.

Michiel Tros: Lawyer at IFS who worked at the prosecutor’s office for four years. Presentation to Dutch lawyers about the new law on expert witnesses (in dutch).

Hannie van der Meij: Forensic Scientist at IFS, expert on DNA, trace recovery and hairs and fibers. She explains the DNA process step by step.

John Dicke: Criminal Defense Attorney, Forensic Psychologist and author, discusses the invalid murder convictions of Timothy Kennedy and how time of death, trace DNA and crime scene reconstruction were used to release an innocent man who had been imprisoned for 14 years.

Richard Eikelenboom: Director of DNA at IFS and DNA scientist and bloodstain pattern analyst. Expert in trace recovery. He worked on many high profile cases in the Netherlands, like the Deventer murder case and the Schiedammer Park killing. In the US he was responsible for the DNA investigations that led to the release of both Tim Masters and Tim Kennedy, miscarriages of justice in the state of Colorado. He discusses the basics of DNA, some high profile cases and how DNA can be useful for the defense.

Selma Eikelenboom-Schieveld: Medical director at IFS and forensic medical scientist. Introduces a new model to estimate time of death and explains the Bayesian approach in medical cases.
